“Two families escape Cyprus, a country in turmoil… a story of love, loyalty, betrayal and new beginnings.”
‘A truly wondrous read about love and change’ – Amazon Book Reviewer

Set against the backdrop of 1950s Cyprus: the rise of EOKA, the underground nationalist movement dedicated to ending British colonial rule in Cyprus and to achieve Enosis (unity) with Greece.

Nine-year-old twin Elena lives with her mother, Evangelia, her brother, and grandmother, in the mountain village of Kato Lefkara. They are content but destitute and rely on hand-me-downs and the generous help of friends and family to survive. Elena’s dream of joining her father in London, after his absence of many years, becomes a reality with the receipt of a letter. With peace across Cyprus being threatened, her mother plans their passage to London. But will their new life bring the safety, love, and new opportunities Elena dreams of.

Teenager Christaki lives with his father, Loizos, his mother, and siblings in Ayios Tychonas, a coastal village overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. His family is well-off, successful, and respected. Christaki faces a bright future until his family, embroiled in the EOKA fight, is faced with threat and great personal loss. The family faces their harsh reality and is forced to reluctantly organise their escape to London.

Life in London is hard but “…nothing is exaggerated here, our heroes suffer culture shock and family tribulations, but they also find new positives…” while trying to forge new beginnings.

Elena and Christaki’s paths cross in London and it seems happier times could be theirs, but at what cost?
